The Walkers have been part of Walker & Ling for over 125 years, and we’re very proud of our business - ‘the shop’. Running a family business is more than just a job; sales and stock are topics of conversation at the breakfast table, on the school run, at Christmas and family parties. Years and years of shared history within the Walker family and the store team, amongst our customers now and in the past, means I often get stopped at work with a “I remember when you were this high”, or "I worked with your cousin", or even better, stories about my great uncle's Bra Bar in the 60s!
We have a towel trolley that has been around for at least 40 years (see below). I was whizzed up and down the shop in this very sturdy and very useful piece of equipment before I could really walk. This week, my 2 year old daughter had her first outing in ‘the bin’!
Another favourite is our Lamson system, which was installed in 1952, and which carries coins in brass canisters through a system of pneumatic tubes within the walls of the store. It’s been entertaining Walker children (and adults) for nearly 70 years.
It is memories like this which make running a family business such a rich and varied experience. And so it is with great pride and pleasure that we received the Family Business of the Year award at the Weston Business Awards. Thank you for nominating, voting and supporting us. Here’s to all the family businesses out there!
I’m also thrilled to launch our support of the British Heart Foundation this week. Each year we choose a charity, and the team voted for the BHF this year. The work of the British Heart Foundation is absolutely vital and anything we can do to help is worthwhile. We have lots of personal connections to the heart and circulatory diseases within the team; indeed almost everybody has a connection to this cause and The British Heart Foundation are at the middle of life-saving research. This is an opportunity for us to show our support, raise funds and promote awareness.
We are supported by Victoria Carswell - BHF Fundraising Manager for Dorset and Somerset - who said: “I very much look forward to working with Walker and Ling throughout 2019. Our corporate partners play a crucial role in helping us win the fight against heart disease. Not only do they raise vital funds for our lifesaving research, but they also help raise awareness of the devastating impact heart disease has in our communities and how we can protect against it.”
We look forward to seeing what bright ideas Victoria and her team has for the store and we’ll do our best to ensure we all have a bit of fun along the way too!
On Valentine’s Day we are beginning our fundraising by wearing red, and holding a prize draw and baking some lovely cupcakes for sale.
